Review
This is probably the most complicated and frustrating book when starting to read and only after 100 pages or so you start to adapt to Maggie's writing, nevertheless the plot is very unique and the characters are really great.
Starting with Blue Sargent, who lives in a household of psychics but she doesn't actually have any psychic abilities, however Blue conducts energy and makes their visions clearer. The book starts off with Blue and her aunt waiting at a church on St. Mark's Eve for the soon-to-be dead to walk by them to get their names. And so they do this every year, but this year Blue finds herself in the position to actually see one of them, Gansey, a boy her age who will die within this year. Blue is told by her aunt that "There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark's Eve, Blue. Either you're his true love...or you killed him."
Blue was always warned by the psychics around her that if she kisses her true love, he will die. And when she meets Gansey and the Raven Boys, she holds back.
The thing that kind of surprised me was that the book hardly focuses on Blue's love life, but the Raven boys themselves. Gansey, who is the leader of the pack is extremely rich and will do anything to find this sleeping Welsh king. Then there's Adam, who takes immediate interest in Blue, who has a troubled family life and lives in a trailer and so he does anything he can to fit in with the other Raven boys. I kind of had this weird feeling that Adam would make the wrong choices in the future and turn on Gansey. There's also Ronan who has immense anger management, but I feel like there's more to him than he puts off. And finally there's Noah who is quiet but seems a little bit troubled sometimes.
At the beginning I was falling off the page due to Maggie's writing style and whenever it was an Adam chapter I used to stop reading and pick it up only half an hour to an hour later because he bore me. I really, really liked the story and I was so surprised because I wanted to put it down as it wasn't pulling me in but soon I found myself on page 200 and something and I was just flying through it. I loved the story of their friendship, and I'm hoping something will happen between Blue and Gansey in the sequel because Adam and Blue are just... bleh.
Literally, after finishing this I was a ball of questions and I'm hoping they'll be answered in the next book. Its a really unique story and I recommend reading it, although give it a few 100 pages and you will enjoy it!
