Gwyneth Shepherd's sophisticated, beautiful cousin Charlotte has been prepared her entire life for traveling through time. But unexpectedly, it is Gwyneth, who in the middle of class takes a sudden spin to a different era!
Gwyneth must now unearth the mystery of why her mother would lie about her birth date to ward off suspicion about her ability, brush up on her history, and work with Gideon--the time traveler from a similarly gifted family that passes the gene through its male line, and whose presence becomes, in time, less insufferable and more essential. Together, Gwyneth and Gideon journey through time to discover who, in the 18th century and in contemporary London, they can trust.
I haven't read a time travelling book before, so I have nothing to compare it to but I was pretty blown away by Ruby Red. Gwyneth, the main character, comes from a family with a special gene that allows a person to travel through time. Gwyneth's cousin, Charlotte, was supposed to be a carrier of the gene according to calculations, and so Charlotte has been training her whole life to time travel. Therefore, nobody believed Gwen and her mother when they visited The Temple/Guardians.
One of the main things that makes Ruby Red so mind blowing is the plot, it was constantly exciting and I never felt myself wanting things to speed up. The concept of the world is amazing and I was okay with things slowing down a little bit to learn more about it. Also, this book is extremely funny at times and I found myself literally laughing out loud at some of the dialogue and Gwyneth's thoughts.
The characters in the novel are so well done and I'm glad this book isn't one of those that had a really fantastic world but awful characters which ruins everything altogether. Gwyneth grows up around the time travelling world but she hasn't got the faintest idea what that means apart from ending up in a different era. So when she actually travels through time she reacts like a normal person would, she's scared, frustrated and excited, unlike most of the supernatural books I've read in the past, the characters have been in the world for like 3 days and they already know and understand everything. Gwyneth also acts kind of dorky since this is all new to her. Its nice to finally read about someone that has no idea what they're getting into but they're willing to try anyway. I also loved her best friend, Leslie, who stuck with her through everything and was googling all the information Gwen gave her, Leslie was kind of a detective for Gwyneth in a way. Her mother on the other hand, Grace, kind of annoyed me because if you and your children are apart of a family that could travel through time you would at least teach them the basics of time travel, but apart from that she played a big part and I love stories that show that parents really do exists. In addition, I kind of liked Gideon de Villers and I'm looking forward to some Gwyneth and Gideon action in Sapphire Blue.
Mostly I was just enchanted by the whole story, the only flaw I would say the book has, was the ending as it was sudden and really random but it will probably be explained in the sequel. I really, really recommend reading Ruby Red, its extraordinary.
